Artist Statement
Handmade paper has been my medium for the past fourteen years. I have used my paper in both 2-D and 3-D forms, in weaving and sculpture, and in making collages. The paper making process is a pleasant and soothing activity. Often the outcome is very intriguing. I am interested in making cotton, flax, abaca, and Japanese kozo papers. It is challenging to think through the problem of achieving a particular consistency, texture or surface for the finished paper. Recently I learned that I could put small sheets of handmade paper through my inkjet printer and create complex designs combining old and modern techniques. This has opened new exciting avenues for my collages.
My recent work is based on personal and inspired experiences of everyday living. The Mexican artist Rodolfo Morales once said, "If the countrywoman doesn't have the imagination to fly, she is in trouble; she really doesn't have any other choice but to imagine everything that she wishes." I, as have many women, have felt this way at times in my life. To be able to meditate on the experiences of living and the power of beauty; and, then to be able to transcend ourselves to the life that we dream is vital to our success and happiness.
It is fair to say that if you can dream it, then you can do it. The hardest part is accepting this possibility and taking the first step. Boldness contains power, magic, and perhaps, genius. If you have a dream, boldly begin your life now.
